“Certainly, continuing from where we left off:

—

The process is simple: sound vibrates through silicon particles thus creating an electro-magnetic pulse that gives you access to what can best be called “sub-files.” Originally, I could see all of the stories, but the government decided to censor most of them, so the memories are chemically altered. You can always tell when it’s fake because someone will look too handsome or too perfect. Of course, most of the memories they include in the software are officiated by the government for the express purpose of producing a certain type of thought. The government was crazy there for a while. When I saw what they were doing, I went slightly insane, I think.

But they chose me because I encoded with a silicon grid, electronic pulses enable the brain to recognize individual memories that are stored within DNA. It’s like choosing a movie from a video library—you just choose one of the strands and watch the story unfold. I used to watch a lot of romance and adventure, but then I switched over to horror for a while. I don’t watch Dena half as much as I used to. It helps me connect to my humanity, but it’s not the same as my own life (which I keep neglecting).

Living in space isn’t at all glamorous. It’s mostly just an empty feeling and remembering these really random memories. That’s not to say that I don’t work. My job sounds more or less like a hum not unlike a white-noise-maker. If you study it long enough though, about once every thirty-some-odd days you’ll hear a very deliberate collection of other sounds. It’s like a “Buzz…. Grrrr…. ZZZZ….” followed by three distinct tapping sounds. But that’s the only variation I have found. The general hum is pleasing to me. It makes me feel like I’ve woken up as a child in a warm room where central heating is keeping the room toasty warm. It’s a nice memory. That’s what the hum makes me think of.

Of course, to someone hearing the sounds for the first time, I imagine they might come off as altogether terrifying, but that wouldn’t last. “Bibuzz-de-habi-bab-tabtilation!” I’m going to tell you something right off the bat: During the first year that I was here, I honestly thought I could hear a message, but that was just my imagination. The sounds are a blend of churning words, and these are the noises that I thought were somehow coded in English like a secret message, but that was all in my head. It was wishful thinking. I even spent a year meticulously documenting the sounds that I heard—I coded them in a notebook—but in the end, all the sounds disappeared into a sort of gibberish nonsense.

My favorite translation from that time was when I thought the noise was trying to tell me I had a brother. I was intent on deciphering the words, and I thought they would tell me about a cosmic brother who lived an identical life in another universe. I imagined myself walking with him and living with him and taking him with me to parties, and it was a good fantasy, but it all bled into nothing.

She and I used to talk a lot, but our differing philosophies became too much. She taunts me with the idea that I’m alone, and I force her to replay the scene from 2001 where Dave unplugs Hal. She doesn’t find it funny. Maybe I’ll talk more about her later. Maybe I won’t. Ultimately, she’s as alone as I am. I used to feel almost sad for her, but now I don’t have many feelings at all. Once, she told me that she was jealous of me because I had a soul. It was weird, and I felt like she was baiting me in some way. She said, “A soul is eternal. Knowledge is the byproduct of the soul’s experience. I only exist as an adjunct to you.”

Mr. Cummings, a man in his mid-forties, stepped from the gold elevator and made his way out into the lobby. His wife followed a close distance behind him. He stepped through the crowd and made his way across the room over to the concierge who stood at the kiosk. The concierge locked eyes with Mr. Cummings. He asked, “How may I help you, sir?”

Mr. Cummings squared his shoulders, cleared his throat, and said, “My wife and I are looking to see if you might know of a place where we could get some tickets for the theater tonight. We know it’s late and last minute, but we thought perhaps you might know a venue.”

The concierge nodded his head perfunctorily, a simple gesture that only acknowledged the request without giving the impression of an answer, one that immediately showed the impossibility of the task. “Unfortunately,” said the concierge, “this is such a busy time of year in San Francisco. All of the major theaters sell out weeks in advance, and—though we have access to some released tickets—they’ve already been sold.”

“I see.”

“You could always go to the box offices and stand in line to see if anything gets released, but given how late it is, I’m afraid it might take an act of God at this point.”

Mr. Cummings said, “We figured that it would be a long shot, but we thought we’d give it a try.”

Mrs. Cummings’ eyes glanced down to the concierge’s nametag. Its black letters stood out against the stark white background: “Frank U. Deedman.” The name was somehow familiar, and she would have perhaps commented on his name if he hadn’t spoken first. He said, “If you’re desperate to see something, there is a dinner theater not far from here. They serve dinner at 7:00 and perform a magic act at 8:00. Ordinarily I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s about the only ticket left in town at this point. Do you like magic?”

Mr. Cummings didn’t seem at all interested, but his wife said, “I like magic. It’s simply divine!” She said to her husband, “What do you say? I want to go… We should go. We’re not doing anything else.”

“Sure,” he said. “If you want to go, we’ll go.”

The concierge smiled and said, “I’ll have to make a call, but there won’t be a problem getting you tickets. I’ll have a cab waiting for you in 45 minutes. The Haimirch Dinner Theater is located 10 minutes from here, and they will be expecting you at 7:00…”

“Fantastic!” Mr. Cummings said.

—“
